Fascinating Southern Sweden

Day 1: Puttgarden / Rødby / Jönköping (445 KM)

From Puttgarden we take the ferry to Rødby and via the Øresund Bridge we reach Malmö and further north our first destination; Jönkpöping.

Day 2: Jönköping/Göta Channel/Stockholm (345 KM)

We start out driving along Lake Vättern past Linköping towards Berg. Our first stop will be the Göta Channel – a magnificent engineering achievement, winding through the Swedish landscape for 190 KM’s. We will sail along the channel to Borensberg. From hereon we travel to Stockholm.

Day 3: Stay in Stockholm

In the morning we take a 3-hour city tour in one of the most beautiful capitals in the world. The city itself is located on numerous small islands and inlets. Highlights in Stockholm are e.g. the old medieval city center, the royal castle and the city hall with its golden hall where the annual Nobel Prizes are awarded. The rest of the day is free to be spent at your own pace. We recommend visiting the magnificent Drottingholm castle, home of the royal family – or alternatively the Vasa Museum or a trip to the open air museum Skansen where you can find 150 historic buildings from all over Sweden.

Day 4: Stockholm / Kalmar (435 KM)

Today’s leg starts with a trip to the small town of Västervik – a prime example of a Swedish small town with well-preserved wooden buildings. Optional: take a detour to Linköping and pay a visit at the local open air museum (entrance free). Then it is only a short trip to Vimmerby, home of the world famous children’s author Astrid Lindgren, where a museum (entrance not incl.) in her honor is established. The day ends in Kalmar, one of the oldest and best preserved cities in Sweden.

Day 5: Kalmar – Excursion to Öland

Today takes us to the charming and sunny island Öland, where a 6 hour guided tour takes us to all the best sights. Worth mentioning is e.g. the Solliden Castle – the summer residence of the royal family. In Borgholm, the only town on the island, you can see the ruins of the once mighty Borgholm Castle. In the middle ages it used to be on of the largest fortifications in northern Europe. In the southern part of the island we visit the old Eketorp Castle, dating back to the Iron Age. In the afternoon we head back to Kalmar.

Day 6: Kalmar / Ystad / Trelleborg / Travemünde (315 KM)

More than 20 glass workshops are located in the area just west of Kalmar – the area is known as “the glass empire”. After a stop here we move southwards to Karlskrona (UNESCO world heritage site), Kristianstad and on to Ystad. The small town of Ystad was made famous through the sturdy police work of Kurt Wallander in the crime novels of Henning Mankell. The town has become somewhat of a pilgrimage for dedicated Mankell fans, and it is actually possible to visit the “home of Wallander” in downtown Ystad. From Ystad we move on to Trelleborg, where we board the ferry to Travemünde in the early evening.

Day 7: Departure – journey back home

Arrival in Travemünde in the early morning hours. Departure back home.
