Gotland – closer than you think

Day 1: Arrival in Travemünde / Trelleborg

Arrival in Travemünde. We board the TT-Line ferry at 10 pm.

Day 2: Trelleborg / Växjö (285 km)

Arrival in Trelleborg at 7.30 am. From hereon we travel towards the medieval city of Malmø where we have the opportunity to take a city tour. A recommended stop along the way is the University City, Lund, with its remarkable cathedral. We travel along the coast and into the densely forested Småland with numerous traditional red-painted Swedish huts dotted all over the landscape. Before we arrive in Växjö we pass through Älmhult where the IKEA headquarters are located.

Day 3: Växjö / Gotland – Visby (150 km)

Today we will head towards the coast to Oskarhamn and from here take the ferry to Visby, the capital of Gotland. Here we have the opportunity to take a city tour in the medieval city center (UNESCO World heritage site). The well preserved city wall with its guarding towers and pits has stood for centuries. Take a stroll through the narrow streets with picturesque houses everywhere you look – here you get a good sense of the splendor that once was Visby.

Day 4: Excursion on Gotland

A roundtrip around the northern Island is on the program today. Here we will see stone ships, old churches, castles and tombs. On the northern coast we will see the “Rukar” rocks, standing as solitaire monoliths on the beach. Afterwards we will drive to Florø, once the home of world renowned movie director Ingemar Bergmann.

Day 5: Excursion on Gotland – Visby/Kalmar

The day starts with an excursion on the southern part of Gotland. Here we will se the rocky southern shore. In the afternoon we take the ferry to Oskarhamn and drive along the coast to the old city of Kalmar, with an impressive city wall fortification and a pretty medieval city center.

Day 6: Kalmar – Öland Island cruise

The morning can e.g. be spent on a city tour in Kalmar. Afterwards we proceed to the island of Öland, where the Swedish royal family resides in the summer months at the Solliden Castle. The landscape of Öland is dominated by windmills, stonewalls and white sandy beaches. We will pay a visit at the Stora Alvaret plateau where a unique flora, henges and an old castle can be experienced. The landmark “Lange Jan” lighthouse and the picturesque town of Borgholmenare our final stops of the day.

Day 7: Kalmar / Trelleborg / Travemünde (325 km)

Today we enter a part of Swede famous for its glass production. Here it is also possible to make trip to the local moose park in Kosta. We travel along the southern coast of Sweden and make a stop in Karlskrona where the naval port is a must see (UNESCO world heritage). Nearby the largest stone ship in Sweden, the “Ales Stenar” can be seen. In Ystad we take a stroll through the city center – made famous by the “Wallander” novels. We board the TT-line ferry at 10 pm, taking us back to Travemünde.

Day 8: Travemünde / Journey home

Arrival in Travemünde at 7.30 am. Journey home.
